Personality:

David is, above all else, three things: charming, a hero and a father. Not necessarily in that order, but at a fundamental level, that's who David is.

David learned at a young age that there at some battles that you just can't win: battles against personal demons e.g., alcoholism, or even against someone far stronger than you. He lets the violent warlord Bo Peep threaten and extort his mother because it means surviving and for some time, that's enough for David. It isn't until Anna of Arendelle arrives on a secret mission that David begins to consider the possibility of that not being enough, and it takes more than just her arrival for him to even get that far. He bonds with her fairly quickly and sees her as a friend and when Bo Peep kidnaps her, he finally realises she's right. Some battles might be impossible, but that's exactly why you should fight them. So he fights back and wins, and David is on his way to becoming the man the fairytales say he is.

David continues to face the challenges life throws at him and always comes out the other side stronger for it. Forced to take your dead twin's place and slay a dragon? No problem, he does it for the sake of his mother, so she'll have the life she deserves, and despite how rude the trained knights are to him for being a simple shepherd boy, he saves their lives and slays the dragon by himself because it's the right thing to do. Forced to take part in an arranged marriage? Sure, because his mother's life is being threatened. Bandit steals his mother's ring and sells it? No big deal, he'll trap her in a net and force her to help him get it back because it's the only memento he has left of her. Oh, what's that? His fiancée doesn't want to go through with it either, and would rather be with her true love who got turned into gold? David faces down a deadly siren to retrieve magical water to fix him so they can be together, because he believes in the concept of true love.

Love, true love, is incredibly important to David, as shown above. It's something he believes in wholeheartedly, and is the driving force behind so many of his actions. He's able to face down the Siren of Lake Nostos because of it, because his heart already belongs entirely to Snow White. But true love it isn't enough, as mentioned above. David is aware that getting it isn't where it ends, it must always be fought for and it isn't a simple fix for any problems. When Snow White admits to the darkness in her heart because she killed Cora, David doesn't judge her and instead promises to help her believe in her own goodness again, because that's what love is to him: something that inspires both parties to be better. He loves so much that choosing to sacrifice himself so Snow can cast the Dark Curse and get back to Emma to stop the Wicked Witch is easy; it's the right thing to do for his family, so he does it without hesitation.

So, we have a man who believes in true love and doing the right thing for his family and the people he loves. Except, now we need to take a look at all the dark parts of Prince Charming, the flaws that make him a person instead of a fairytale figure.

David Nolan, the man he becomes under Regina's Dark Curse is a prime example of this. He's anything but the charming, heroic man the stories tell of, and instead is a man who doesn't know what he wants. He wants to be true to the memories given to him by the curse and try and make his marriage with Kathryn work, but he also wants to follow his heart and be with Mary Margaret Blanchard, Snow White under the Curse's power, and instead manages to destroy both relationships. He has an affair with Mary Margaret and then refuses to believe Mary Margaret's claims that she had nothing to do with Kathryn's disappearance. David Nolan is a weak man, with no faith in others and ultimately no faith in himself.

When the curse breaks, however, David is able to realise that he is both. He is Prince Charming and David Nolan. David Nolan is his weaknesses, and Prince Charming is his strengths. But that doesn't mean Charming is free of flaw, certainly not.

The so-called Prince Charming has a bit of an impulsive streak, that when combined with a certain ruthlessness for those he deems "villains" isn't a good look. When Snow White is uncertain about whether or not executing Regina is the right thing to do, David goes ahead and orders the execution. He punches Doctor Whale in the face upon finding out he slept with Mary Margaret while they were cursed, despite everything he did while cursed. So yes, he can be rash and often reacts with physical violence when it's completely unnecessary.

This all pales in comparison to the things Charming does when he thinks it's the right thing. For the sake of his family, there isn't much he wouldn't do and unfortunately, kidnapping a baby isn't one of those things. While trying to find a way to evade Regina's Dark Curse, Snow and Charming are told about their child's potential for great good or great darkness and react badly. Fearing that their daughter will grow up to the the worst villain in history, they learn of a ritual to ensure her future goodness, which requires another "blank slate" as it were, to transplant the child's potential darkness to. They go as far as kidnapping Maleficent's child, which they think is a dragon because it's in an egg, and completing the ritual, which ends in the child being sent through a portal to another world because of the sheer amount of darkness it now possesses.

Though it's after his canon point, when they run the risk of Emma finding out what they did to ensure her goodness, David's reaction is to lie to her. A lot. Like a lot and try to ensure Cruella and Ursula aren't allowed into Storybrooke, and when that doesn't work, Snow and Charming threaten them with death. He continues to lie to Emma and try to put a stop to anything Cruella and Ursula might be planning because this one secret would destroy his already fairly fragile relationship with his daughter, which is entirely his fault for sending her away as a baby to escape the curse and not being there for her entire life.

So, to sum up, we have a man who will always do what he thinks is the right thing for his family, even if it isn't actually the right thing. Because family is everything.

Powers/Abilities: Despite being a fairytale character, David is an ordinary human trained in the art of swordsmanship by Anna of Arendelle. Combine that with an instinctual ability to adapt to any sort of weapon rather quickly, and he’s a fairly formidable fighter. But, still human with all the strengths and weaknesses that comes with.

He also seems to possess a magical connection to Snow White, as he feels pain when she falls under the Sleeping Curse, and as of their year back in the Enchanted Forest, is currently living with half of Snow’s heart in his body, as his own was crushed and turned to dust.
